Reimagining Education: Connecting the Dots

Another interesting take on the #future of learning from Harvard Business Review.

To piggy back on the application and development of soft skills: A four year degree and other highly structured degree programs are still wonderful achievements. They give points of reference for concepts you will manipulate on the job. But relevance seems to be moving at the speed of light.

Recertifcation is a concept and possible perpetual revenue stream. It's odd that universities are not requiring it for the many cerifications they are rolling out; particularly the more complex and less static disciplines.

Another structure that comes to mind is a learning series. A series that allows one skill or concept to build upon another according to the interests of the learner. To provide a buildout that allows a customizable level of verified achievement — even for learning that might seem disjointed on the surface. Perhaps it could be measured by a project that illustrates the learner’s ability to communicate the value and connection between the disciplines. A program with less structure that allows the learner to critically think about how the concepts can be applied together.

This type of program seems like it could be a dynamic idea generator and innovation incubator. The most innovative minds of our lifetime left university to create and pursue their own connecting of the dots and made connections that had not yet been imaginged and thus not reflected in the rigid learning structures available to them.
